When I flew to Oklahoma City for Granddad's funeral I came in on a separate flight alone. I expected to take a cab from the airport to the hotel, but first I thought I'd call Rodene see if anyone else was scheduled to arrive that day so we might share the ride. She told me Emil was at the airport at that very moment picking up arrivals, and I should catch a ride with him. "Great!" I said and hung up to look for Emil. Then it occurred to me that I had no idea what Emil looked like. Hmm, maybe this wasn't such a great idea after. How would I ever find him unless I were to stand in the middle of the crowded airport and shout his name for 10 minutes? But, within minutes I spotted a virtual clone of granddad loading bags into a Cadillac. He was slightly heavier and younger than granddad but there was no doubt this had to be Emil. I introduce myself and hopped in for the ride from the airport to the hotel, wondering why I would have ever had a problem spotting Emil in a crowded airport. 1998 |
