Commercial Resources: Insurance,  Marinas

To help you with the details of making a buying decision, here are some recommended commercial services companies that I have personally used in the past.  I have no affiliation with these companies and any recommendation is solely based upon my personal experiences.   In any case, here is a good place to start:

Present coverage for this boat is through Allstate.  My present premium is $276/year or $23 per month.

Allstate Insurance
Yes, Allstate quietly offers Marine coverage.  They don't advertise this much, but talk to a local agent about this service.  I have found claims to be excellent.

Westmar Insurance
Probably the largest Marine Insurance company in the area.  When no one else will cover Marine, Westmar usually does.  Prices seem to be quite competitive.

This summer a couple of major marinas have closed permanently.  Others are undergoing dredging .  Finally, the hot weather this summer has increased demand for the entire area.  The end result is that slips are in short supply this year. Finding a slip may require some creativity.  Here are some ideas.

The boat is presently kept at Bethel Island on the Delta and the present slip is probably available for the buyer of this boat.  Check with the harbor master first because there is a waiting list of people who want this slip.  There , a number of Marinas on the Bay, many of which offer live aboard slips but because of the tight supply they are hard to find.  Remember that you should also investigate private berths.  Check your local marine news periodical.  Talk to the local Yacht clubs.  Check with realtors who specialize in waterfront properties.  Sometimes a little legwork upfront can save you a lot of hassle and cost in finding a permanent home for your boat.

If you are looking  for a live aboard on the Bay, here are a couple of hints when visiting a given marina. When asked what kind of boat is it, tell them it is a "42' Nautaline", instead of  telling them it is a "houseboat."   (Some people still think of a houseboat as a  dilapidated wooden barge that used to be on the north bay.)  Bring a picture of the boat with you so they can see it will be a nice addition to the Harbor.  Dedicated "Live Aboard" slips are limited, but many people get by with a regular slip because they maintain a separate address as their primary residence and only stay onboard less than 7 nights a week.  If you get on a waiting list, ask if you can dock at the guest dock until your slip becomes available.

Private docks can be a wonderful alternative to berthing at a Marina.  They open up all the time, but the trick is finding them.  Get to know a few people in the marine community nearby and  solicited their help (finders fee?)  Your local realtor who specializes in waterfront properties may be an excellent resource.
